Description

The Spring card game is a thoughtful two-player strategy game where players cultivate a garden full of blooming flowers. As nature awakens and the landscape fills with color, players must carefully place cards, plan their moves, and adapt their strategies to create the most successful garden.

Designed by María and Enrique Blasco and illustrated with the bright and lively tone that spring deserves, the Spring card game is part of the Four Seasons series of abstract strategy games. Like the other titles in the series, it offers elegant mechanics, quick gameplay, and meaningful decisions in a compact format.

The Spring card game supports 2 players ages 8 and up, and each match offers a quick yet strategic duel filled with clever placements and tactical choices.

Two Distinct Phases of Play

The Spring card game unfolds across two clearly different phases, each presenting unique challenges and strategic opportunities.

First, players work together to build a shared garden. Later, they dismantle that garden and use the cards to create their own personal gardens. Because the objectives change between phases, players must adapt their strategies as the game progresses.

At the end of the second phase, the player with the highest score wins the game.

Phase One: Growing the Shared Garden

During the first phase, players take turns placing cards on the table so that they partially overlap existing cards. As the layout grows, a colorful garden begins to form.

When a watering can symbol falls on top of a flower of your color, that flower becomes bloomed.

Therefore, players aim to create as many separate gardens as possible. A garden forms when at least two orthogonally connected spaces of the same color appear together.

However, success requires careful planning. Players must not only grow their own gardens but also disrupt their opponent’s groups whenever possible.

In addition, players can place fences to define or protect certain areas of the garden.

Phase Two: Building Your Personal Garden

Once the shared garden is complete, the second phase begins.

Now players dismantle the shared garden and take turns drafting cards from it. Each player uses these cards to build a personal garden layout.

At this stage, the objective changes. Instead of creating several gardens, players now aim to form one large connected garden made up of orthogonally adjacent spaces of their color.

Because of this shift, players must rethink their strategy and carefully choose which cards to draft.

Strategic Depth in a Small Package

Although the Spring card game uses a small number of components, it offers surprising strategic depth. Players must think ahead, anticipate their opponent’s plans, and adjust their tactics as the garden evolves.

Furthermore, the two-phase structure creates a satisfying balance between long-term planning and tactical adaptation.

Part of the Four Seasons Series

The Spring card game belongs to the Four Seasons series, a collection of abstract two-player games inspired by the seasons. Alongside Winter and Autumn, each game explores different mechanics while maintaining a similar elegant design philosophy.

In addition, the game is part of the Devir Pocket collection, known for delivering engaging tabletop experiences in compact and portable formats.

Whether you are playing at home, traveling, or enjoying a quick strategic duel, the Spring card game offers a refreshing challenge.
