Description
The Magic Labyrinth board game is a clever and magical family game where players take the role of young wizard apprentices searching for lost magical objects inside a mysterious maze. However, the maze is not as simple as it looks. Hidden beneath the board are invisible walls, and only players with strong memory and careful movement will succeed in navigating it.
Designed by Dirk Baumann and illustrated by Rolf Vogt, the Magic Labyrinth board game is a beloved children’s game that combines memory, exploration, and a unique physical mechanic that truly feels magical.
Thanks to its creative design and engaging gameplay, the game won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres, recognizing it as one of the most outstanding family games for younger players.
The Magic Labyrinth board game is recommended for 2 to 4 players ages 6 and up, and each game lasts around 30 minutes, making it perfect for family game nights.
A Maze with Invisible Walls
Players act as apprentice magicians with an important mission: collect five magical symbols before the others do. These symbols appear one at a time in different spaces on the board.
However, the master wizard has prepared a challenge. Beneath the board lies a hidden maze filled with invisible wooden walls. Players cannot see these obstacles, so they must rely on memory and observation to navigate safely.
If a player moves into a hidden wall, they quickly discover their mistake.
A Truly Magical Game Mechanic
One of the most unique elements of the Magic Labyrinth board game is its double-board system with magnets.
Each player’s pawn sits on the top board, while a metal ball hangs beneath it using a magnet. As long as the pawn moves through open paths, the metal ball stays attached underneath.
However, if the pawn attempts to cross a hidden wall, the metal ball drops and rolls out of the board. When this happens, the player must return to their starting corner and try again.
Because of this mechanic, players must remember the positions of invisible walls discovered during the game.
Setup and Gameplay
At the start of the game, players build the maze using wooden wall pieces placed beneath the board. The difficulty can be adjusted by using fewer walls, which makes the maze easier for younger players.
Next, magical symbol tokens are placed in a cloth bag. One token is drawn and placed on the board to show the next objective.
Players then place their pawns in the corners and attach the metal balls underneath. With the maze ready, the magical adventure begins.
On their turn, players roll the die and move their pawn horizontally or vertically across the grid. Diagonal movement is not allowed, and players may move fewer spaces than the die result if they wish.
If a player successfully reaches the symbol shown on the board, they collect it and a new symbol appears.
Winning the Game
The game continues as players explore the maze, remember the hidden walls, and race toward the next magical symbol.
The first player to collect five symbols wins the game and proves they are the most talented apprentice magician.
A Magical Family Experience
The Magic Labyrinth board game stands out thanks to its innovative components and memorable gameplay. The invisible maze system creates surprising and exciting moments that children and adults enjoy alike.
Because it encourages memory, spatial thinking, and playful competition, it remains one of the most charming family games available today.
