Description
The Red Cathedral board game is a strategic Euro-style board game where players become construction teams tasked with building the famous Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow. Commissioned by Ivan IV of Russia, also known as Ivan the Terrible, the project promises great prestige—but only one team will ultimately gain the Tsar’s favor.
Designed by the duo Sheila Santos and Israel Cendrero, known together as Llama Dice, the Red Cathedral board game blends accessible rules with deep strategic choices. Players must carefully manage resources, claim construction sections, and complete parts of the cathedral before their rivals.
The game features beautiful artwork inspired by the style of Ivan Bilibin, a renowned Russian illustrator whose influence gives the game a distinctive visual identity.
Recommended for 1 to 4 players, the Red Cathedral board game offers thoughtful gameplay and competitive tension in sessions that typically last 30 to 45 minutes.
Build the Cathedral in The Red Cathedral Board Game
In the Red Cathedral board game, each player controls a team responsible for constructing sections of the cathedral. Although the teams work on the same monument, they compete to gain the most prestige and recognition.
During their turn, players choose one of three main actions:
-
Claim a section of the cathedral
-
Send resources to build a claimed section
-
Visit the board to obtain new resources
Because these actions interact with each other, players must constantly watch their opponents’ progress and adapt their plans.
Claiming and Building Sections
When a player claims a cathedral section, they take control of spaces within the column corresponding to that section. This allows them to send resources and advance construction.
Once the required resources are delivered, the section becomes completed. Completing sections rewards players with money and prestige points.
Additionally, players may add decorations to finished sections, gaining further recognition and increasing their final score.
The Rondel Resource System
One of the most distinctive features of the Red Cathedral board game is its rondel resource system.
The board contains a circular track where players select dice and move them a number of spaces equal to the value shown on the die. The space where the die lands determines which resources the player receives.
Because dice positions constantly change, the rondel creates a dynamic puzzle where players must choose the right moment to collect the resources they need.
Racing Toward the End
The game continues as players gather materials, build sections, and decorate the cathedral.
However, construction eventually comes to an end. When any player completes their sixth section, the game immediately triggers the final scoring phase.
Players then calculate their prestige points from completed sections, decorations, and other bonuses. The player with the highest total wins the Tsar’s favor.
Strategic Depth with Accessible Rules
The Red Cathedral board game stands out for combining simple rules with meaningful strategic depth. Players quickly learn the available actions, yet every decision affects their long-term strategy.
Because of this balance, the game appeals both to newcomers discovering Euro-style games and to experienced players who enjoy optimizing their strategies.
