Description

The Winter card game is a clever abstract strategy game where two players compete to control a frozen lake before the ice melts away. Through careful card placement and strategic timing, players attempt to secure key areas of the lake and maintain control until the end of the game.

Designed as part of the Four Seasons series, the Winter card game offers quick yet thoughtful gameplay that challenges players to plan ahead while reacting to their opponent’s moves.

This compact strategy game supports 2 players ages 8 and up, and most matches last about 10 minutes, making it ideal for quick duels or travel gaming.

Build the Frozen Lake

At the beginning of the Winter card game, players start creating the frozen lake using snowflake cards. During this freezing phase, players place cards in a contiguous layout that gradually forms the surface of the lake.

Meanwhile, players attempt to control key zones. Whenever a player manages to connect four snowflakes of their color, they can secure that area by placing one of their chips on it.

Therefore, players must constantly balance expansion with positioning, since controlling the right areas early can provide a decisive advantage later in the game.

Control Territory with Smart Placement

Every placement matters in the Winter card game. Players must carefully decide where to extend the frozen lake and where to focus their efforts.

However, simply expanding the board is not enough. Players must also watch their opponent closely and prevent them from forming their own groups of four snowflakes.

Because both players share the same space, every move can either strengthen your control or open opportunities for your rival.

The Ice Begins to Melt

After the freezing phase ends, the game enters the unfreezing phase.

During this stage, players begin removing and moving their cards and chips from the board. As the lake slowly disappears, the carefully built layout changes dramatically.

As a result, players must adapt quickly to the evolving board while trying to preserve as many controlled areas as possible.

Victory on the Frozen Lake

When the game ends, players count the number of their chips remaining on the table. The player who controls the most areas wins the game.

Because the board constantly changes during the unfreezing phase, even a strong early advantage may disappear if a player does not plan carefully.

Award-Winning Abstract Strategy

The Winter card game won the 2021 Cardboard Edison Award, recognizing its elegant design and engaging gameplay.

It is also the first title in the Four Seasons series, which later continues with other seasonal games such as Autumn, Summer, and Spring.

A Compact Strategy Experience

With simple components and fast gameplay, the Winter card game delivers a thoughtful abstract challenge in a portable format. Its small footprint and quick setup make it perfect for travel, casual matches, or introducing new players to strategic board games.
